Reformation Day is here! Reformation Day was something I was not aware of as a kid growing up. It was not taught or celebrated. However, after studying and coming to a knowledge of what happened on October 31st, 1517, it gripped my heart, and a deep appreciation for what Martin Luther did and the courage it took hold of my life.
Misconception
Now, I want to clear the air: Martin Luther was not trying to start a revolution or spark controversy. He was trying to spark debate. However, the question must be asked: Why October 31st? November 1st is called “All Saints Day.” All Saints Day was celebrated throughout the local church, and Luther knew there would be a huge crowd gathering at the church the next day. Therefore, he saw this as the perfect opportunity to nail his 95 theses to the church door and spark healthy debate. But, the response blew him away. His 95 theses revealed that the church was beyond repair and needed reformation. Because of his idea, the world would never be the same.
Result
Luther touched on many critical issues in the Catholic church, including purgatory, salvation, and forgiveness. But, the most significant win in the Reformation was Bible translation. Luther wanted a Bible in the person’s everyday language. The success of the reformers is something to celebrate and cherish. The Western church is standing on the shoulders of these faithful men. So, as you take your kids trick or treating, remember that today is more extensive than costumes and candy. It is a day to celebrate the work of a true hero of the faith.
